When it comes to spray painting a vehicle, you must put down the cheap instant spray can! It's best to use quality paint products designed specifically for automobiles. Off-the-counter spray cans shoot paint from ultra-cheap nozzles, which are not guaranteed to continuously flow at the same speed or provide the same spray pattern. As a result, the amount of spray paint that lands on any given spot is completely random.
Spray paint cans were meant for small jobs, which means their nozzles can't handle blasting out paint until the can is empty. The nozzle will clog, leading to a dripping mess, not just on the ground, but also on the car itself. And, the color in a can of spray paint is not guaranteed to match the one on the shelf beside it, even if the color on the cap is the same.

In order to get professional-level quality out of your DIY paint job, a comprehensive process of preparation and technique is required. First, you must start by taping off and masking body trim and glass to avoid overspray. To ensure an even and durable finish, you must complete properly sanding of the car's sheet metal and plastic. Next, your project car needs coated in primer for automotive paint to evenly even stick to the body.
When preparing a body for paint, there are several primer coats. This is the stage after major body work is done. Large panels of bare metal need etching primer or epoxy primer. Then the car gets block sanded, primed again, and block sanded again. The last surface coat before paint is the sealer, which seals all the primer and provides a uniform base coat. This final base coat of primer does not get scuffed or sanded.
